Ways to setup a
drill press correctly
It is essential to
know your drill press before operating it. For required data on your drill
press, you should check the owner’s manual carefully to get the most of your
drill press.
Installation: While setting up the drill press in your shop,
it should be installed in a place where you can easily conduct a woodwork.
Overhead light is crucial even if the equipment contains a lamp. While the
bench-type drill press can be installed on the workbench, the operation will
prove more satisfactory when installed on a wood or steel stand. When mounting
the drill press to the bench, bolts and nuts are used to fasten the machine
base to the bench top.
On the wooden floor, a
bench and stand models can be protected with lag bolts. Masonry bolts and
anchors are used on concrete floor. A separate electrical circuit should be
used for power tool. The circuit should not be less than 12 gauge wire and
secured with a 20 amp time-lag fuse. The drill press should be grounded to
secure the user from an electric shock. The motors for small drill press often
operate on 120 volts, single phase and are equipped with a three phase cord and
three prong grounding plug to fit.
Lubrication
For all drill presses,
a coat of paste wax with a piece of wax paper will secure the table surface.
Clean with a slightly oiled cloth will prevent component corrosion. Lubricate
the spline and quill with a light machine oil. Read the instruction manual for
additional lubrication.
Speed and feed
Factors that decide
the best speed for use in any drill press operation include: the material type
to be processed, hole size, drill bit or cutter and cut quality required. A
small drill can better provide the required rpm.
